Freaky Mask Friday (Craig Billington, Boston Bruins)

Craig Billington
1995-96 Upper Deck #112

Looks like Craig Billington's eyes are bugging out of his head!

"All the better to see the puck with!"

An extra copy of this card is definitely going to my random pages of funny cards.

Craig Billington
1994-95 Flair #119

Here's a look Billington's mask transition to Ottawa from New Jersey...

In the right photo, Billington is still wearing his old New Jersey Devils mask.

The shape of a Roman visor seems to have been inspired by the Devil horns.

Pieces of Flair...

Tom Barasso
1994-95 Flair #133
The 1994-95 Flair set uses a couple player photographs super-imposed over each other...

In this case, we can see the transition from Tom Barasso's 1992-93 mask to the mask he wore the following season.

I kinda prefer the white mask... There's something about the yellow cage, and simple Penguin (aka pidgeon) logo on either side.

Today's masks are so bogged down with detail that it becomes harder to recognize a goaltender from a distance.

Federov Flair...

Sergei Federov
1994-95 Flair #246
(MVP Series)

From the back of the card:

"We were going to take Pavel Bure or Sergei Federov" stated Ken Holland, Detroit's Assistant General Manager and Scouting Director...

Young hockey prospects from the former Soviet Union were harder to sign, seal and deliver than any North American free agent. The story of his "Coming to America" is a tale right out of a James Bond novel."

Federov or Bure... With hindsight being 20/20, Now that would be a tough decision. Federov won a Stanley Cup with the Wings. Bure made it to the finals with the Canucks. I still get a kick out of the fact that these guys were pulled from the FOURTH round of the draft...

Hawks & Whalers Trade of '93 (Weinrich, Larmer)

Eric Weinrich
1993-94 Leaf #271

Researching the trades between the Chicago Blackhawks and Hartford Whalers in 1994 caused me to take a look at a Hawks-Whalers trade from the previous season (1992-1993).

Steve Larmer
1993-94 Topps/OPC Premier #240
One of my favorite cards from this set.
An incredible snapshot with six bodies in front of the Tampa Bay net on Steve Larmer's card... As a bonus, the Stanley Cup Centennial logo is on the boards, just above the focal point.

From nhltradetracker.com:

Eric Weinrich
1995-96 Upper Deck #45

Partial trade history for Eric Weinrich, with a good handful of familiar '90s characters involved in the deals.

Explains how the Whalers got goaltender Sean Burke, and how they obtained Steve Larmer and Bryan Marchment.

Steve Larmer
1994-95 Flair #113

This deal also has a case of a player who got traded, without playing a single game for the Whalers before being traded again.

Steve Larmer was immediately dealt to the New York Rangers, where coach Mike Keenan was collecting pieces of the eventual 1994 champion Rangers. (Steve Larmer had been a member of the Chicago Blackhawks coached by Mike Keenan)
