2013-14 SP Authentic

Andy Moog
2013-14 SP Authentic #55
Another guy featured in an SP Authentic set with a team that people might not commonly associate him with...

Andy Moog debuted with the Edmonton Oilers from 1981 to 1988.
He was traded to Boston in exchange for Bill Ranford.

Moog wore number 35 for his entire career (Edmonton, Boston, Dallas, Montreal).

(Ex-Oilers Grant Fuhr and Paul Coffey are also featured in this set)

2011-12 SP Authentic

Jaroslav Halak
2011-12 SP Authentic #13

2011-12 SP Authentic
Total Cards: 150

Another set that I missed out on a couple years ago...
Just happened to find a near-complete set sandwiched between a few other sets within a random binder purchase.

Really digging these retro style St Louis Blues jerseys.

Jaroslav Halak is currently backstopping the Boston Bruins with Tukka Rask (and a pair of young goaltenders).

Brendan Shanahan
2011-12 SP Authentic #59

Part of the fun of the SPA sets are the random cards featuring players like Bobby Orr and Gretzky...

For some reason, they decided to feature Brendan Shanahan's brief time with the Hartford Whalers.

Shanahan had 79 points in his 76 games with the Whalers.
It's also the only time he'd wear number 94 for an NHL team.

With yet another Whalers card added to my collection, I now have approximately 11% of the Hartford Whalers cards ever produced.

Dany Heatley
2011-12 SP Authentic #92

Another "retro" jersey that's slowly growing on me... At least it's better than some of the other uniforms worn by the Minnesota Wild.

Wasn't aware that Dany Heatley had been with the Wild. Scored 102 points in 194 games during his 3 seasons with the team.

Jose Theodore
2011-12 SP Authentic #104

Can't say that I recall Jose Theodore ever playing for the Florida Panthers...

He actually finished his career in Florida, playing 53 games in the 2011-12 season, and 15 games in the lockout-shortened 2012-13 season.

Rock & Roll Air Guitar with Mike Modano (1995-96 Upper Deck #420)

Mike Modano
1995-96 Upper Deck #420
Looks like Mike Modano is jammin' with an air guitar in this snapshot.

Let's get ready to rock!

Reese Pieces...

Jeff Reese
1991-92 Parkhurst #250

Finally, just to satisfy my curiosity of how goaltender Jeff Reese arrived in Hartford...

Figured he was involved in the "big trade" (six man deal) between the Hartford Whalers and Calgary Flames (March 1994), but it was actually separate trade that occurred between the two teams four months earlier (November 1993).

From nhltradetracker.com:

Jeff Reese
1994-95 Topps Premier #27

In exchange for Jeff Reese, Hartford sent defenceman Dan Keczmer to Calgary.

Had never even heard of Dan Keczmer... Was also unable to find out exactly what "future considerations" may have been exercised.

Still figuring that Hartford got the best end of the deal.

My favorite Jeff Reese stat:

"Jeff Reese holds an NHL record he set while with the Flames...
...he’s known for his offense during a Flames 13-1 victory (over the Sharks on February 10, 1993). He would dish out three assists in that game setting an NHL record for assists in a game by a goalie."

Flames forward Theoren Fleury also set a league record by going +9 in this game.

Hawks & Whalers Trade of '93 (Weinrich, Larmer)

Eric Weinrich
1993-94 Leaf #271

Researching the trades between the Chicago Blackhawks and Hartford Whalers in 1994 caused me to take a look at a Hawks-Whalers trade from the previous season (1992-1993).

Steve Larmer
1993-94 Topps/OPC Premier #240
One of my favorite cards from this set.
An incredible snapshot with six bodies in front of the Tampa Bay net on Steve Larmer's card... As a bonus, the Stanley Cup Centennial logo is on the boards, just above the focal point.

From nhltradetracker.com:

Eric Weinrich
1995-96 Upper Deck #45

Partial trade history for Eric Weinrich, with a good handful of familiar '90s characters involved in the deals.

Explains how the Whalers got goaltender Sean Burke, and how they obtained Steve Larmer and Bryan Marchment.

Steve Larmer
1994-95 Flair #113

This deal also has a case of a player who got traded, without playing a single game for the Whalers before being traded again.

Steve Larmer was immediately dealt to the New York Rangers, where coach Mike Keenan was collecting pieces of the eventual 1994 champion Rangers. (Steve Larmer had been a member of the Chicago Blackhawks coached by Mike Keenan)

Whalers & Flames Trade of '94 (Gary Suter Becomes a Hawk)

Gary Suter
1993-94 Pinnacle #14
Always interested to find out how players arrived at certain teams...

Gary Suter was traded from the Calgary Flames to the Hartford Whalers as part of a six-man deal in 1994.

Suter never actually played a single game for the Whalers, as he was sent to Chicago the very next day.

From nhltradetracker.com:

Jocelyn Lemieux
1994-95 Premier #122

The Hartford Whalers traded Gary Suter (along with Randy Cunneyworth) to the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for Jocelyn Lemieux (and Frantisek Kucera).

Gary Suter
1995-96 Upper Deck #284

My favorite Gary Suter stat:

"Gary Suter became the first Chicago defenseman to register a hat trick in a playoff game on April 24 1994"

Defenceman Gary Suter also holds the NHL record for most assists in a single game by a rookie with 6 assists in a 9-3 Calgary Flames victory over the Edmonton Oilers (Apr. 4, 1986). He was also the NHL rookie of the year in 1986.

This particular card has a Brett Hull cameo on the front, Chris Chelios on the back.

Headless Horsemen...

Scott Stevens
2003-04 O-Pee-Chee #128
From this angle on Scott Stevens' card, it looks like goalie Martin Brodeur's head is popping off...

Mike Vernon
1995-96 Upper Deck #4

Makes me think of this card...
Mike Vernon putting his head back on.

Reminds me of Terminator 3. Arnold's T-800 re-attaching its' own head after being decapitated during a fight with the rival T-X.

Mike Richter
1995-96 Upper Deck #438

Another card from the 1995-96 UD set...
Looks like Mike Richter's mask is rolling around behind the net.

Although it's a new card to my collection, the photo seemed familiar... His Collector's Choice card from the same year also features him without a mask...
(1995-96 Collector's Choice #306)

With the same ad on the opposing team's arena boards, the photos are likely from the same sequence.

In today's game, I'm pretty sure the ref blows the whistle to stop the play if the goaltender loses his mask.

They Don't Know Jackman...

Richard Jackman
2005-06 Parkhurst #387
Back in the day, I tried to find cards of a guy named Richard "Ric" Jackman. Nobody had ever heard of him...

An offensively gifted defenceman, Richard Jackman was possibly overshadowed by emerging young defenceman Barett Jackman (of the St Louis Blues).

Grouped with the Penguins in the 2005-06 Parkhurst set (card numbers 383 thru 398), Richard Jackman has absolutely no Penguins stats listed on the back of his card.

Of course, it's not uncommon for a traded player to be found with his old team in a set of hockey cards...
(Or even to be with his new team yet still wearing his old uniform in the photo)

While I barely own half of this mammoth 700-card set, Jackman appears to be the ONLY traded player in uniform with his new team... Just strange they were pro-active enough to include a new photo of a relatively unknown player who's card doesn't indicate any affiliation with the Penguins.

Jackman was acquired by the Pittsburgh Penguins on February 11, 2004 (from Toronto).

Richard Jackman
2005-06 Parkhurst #387
(card back)

The 2003-04 season lists 54 games with the Maple Leafs.
He actually split the previous season between the Leafs and Pens.
(29 games with Toronto, 24 games for Pittsburgh)

It could be there simply wasn't enough space to list "MAPLE LEAFS / PENGUINS".

Interestingly enough, he scored only 6 points in 29 games with Toronto.
Compare that to his 24 points in 25 games with the Penguins.
Not too shabby for a defenceman.

It's also a bit of a weird timing anomally... Although he'd been with the Penguins for 2 years (2004-2006), it was only two partial seasons.

Richard Jackman was traded from Pittsburgh to Florida on March 9, 2006.
The 2005-06 Parkhurst hockey card set was released on June 21, 2006.

The set was released just 3 months after Jackman was traded.
It's still relatively impressive that they were able to include a photo of him in his new Panthers' uniform.

Dynasty Drawings...

Bernie Parent
1992-93 Parkhurst #470
While it's hard to use the word "dynasty" to describe back-to-back championships, the Flyers had a competitive team for years... So it's easy to appreciate the awesome goalie art on these cards.

This subset pays tribute to the Philadelphia Flyers' Stanley Cup victories in 1974 & 1975.

Bobby Taylor
1992-93 Parkhurst #475

Part of the 1992-93 Parkhurst base set, there are 13 cards that depict a dozen players (and Coach Fred Shero).

With so many brands at this point in hockey collecting history, I never knew these even existed.

Shutout Club...

Mike Richter
1994-95 Topps Stadium Club #181
Another "subset" within the base set, this time featuring goalie shutouts from the previous season in 1994-95 Stadium Club (card numbers 178-190 of the 270 card set).

From Beckett magazine (June 1995 - Issue #56):

"Hockey historians will likely look back on 1993-94 as the Year of the Goalie. Just how good was the netminding? A puckstopper had to post at least three shutouts during the 1993-94 season to make this 13-card subset"

Patrick Roy (card #178) and Dominik Hasek (card #179) each had 7 shutouts. Darcy Wakaluk had 3 shutouts (card #187).

Mike Richter had 5 shutouts during the 1993-94 season.
Not to mention a Stanley Cup Championship with the Rangers.

Ron Hextall
1994-95 Topps Stadium Club #182
Also with 5 shutouts is Ron Hextall.
Still find it odd to see Hextall in a New York Islanders uniform.

Front and back, this is a really great card. Definitely hope to acquire more from this subset, possibly even the entire 1994-95 Stadium Club.

Ron Hextall
1994-95 Topps Stadium Club #182
(card back)
Was curious exactly how Hextall came to leave and return to the Philadelphia Flyers.

June 1992: Flyers trade Hextall to Quebec as part of Eric Lindros deal
June 1993: Islanders acquire Ron Hextall for Mark Fitzpatrick
September 1994: Flyers re-acquire Ron Hextall in exchange for Tommy Soderstrom

A Debut for the Ages...

Patrick Lalime RC
1996-97 Select Certified #108
More junk-wax treasures...

Actually had this on my list of cards that I hoped to add to my collection.

An exciting story from around the turn of the century.
With injuries to Barasso and Wregget, third string goalie Patrick Lalime fell into the starting role for the Pittsburgh Penguins...

From the back of the card:

"Patrick secured a place in NHL history by starting his goaltending career with a 15-game unbeaten streak. On Jan 15, 1997 he shut out the Whalers and improved his starting career record to 13-0-2, surpassing Vezina Trophy winner Ken Dryden's career start of 12-0-2 for Montreal in 1970-71."

The unbeaten streak would continue for a total of 16 games (14-0-2) to begin his NHL career.
(this was a few years before the introduction of the shootout, eliminating ties from the equation)

Other Lalime rookie cards found within the sets of 1996-97:
Black Diamond, Donruss Elite, Flair, Ultra, and Upper Deck Ice.

Wouldn't mind finding Lalime's cards from 1996-97 Donruss Elite or 1996-97 Ultra.

Imported Wax...

Arturs Irbe
1992-93 Ultra Import #5
Right in the middle of the hockey card boom was 1992-93 Fleer Ultra.

Back then, there were only several insert sets on top of the base set.

I had collected a few of the "Ultra Imports" back in the day, mostly because the graphics were pretty slick at the time...

(And because of players like Bure, Federov and Jagr)

Found an incomplete 1992-93 Fleer Ultra Imports subset within a random binder purchase.

Combined with my existing cards, I now have the full 25 cards in all their junk-wax glory!

Ninety-Five Nostalgia...

Sylvain Cote
1994-95 Pinnacle #33
Two random cards that happened to catch my eye...

Horizontal snapshots featuring the Pens VS Caps rivalry. Tomas Sandstrom also appears on both cards.

Looks like Sylvain Cote has just managed to evade the forecheck by Sandstrom.

Tomas Sandstrom
1995-96 Upper Deck #185

Another battle on Tomas Sandstrom's card, with the home & away teams reversed.

At the time these cards were released, the "Patrick" Division no longer existed.
The Capitals were playing in the "Atlantic" Division with the Rangers, Islanders, Flyers and Devils (along with the Panthers and Lightning).

The Penguins had been grouped with the "Northeast" Division (Bruins, Sabres, Whalers, Canadiens, Nordiques and Senators).

Quack in Black...

Ilya Bryzgalov
2007-08 O-Pee-Chee #15
While I don't approve of the Ducks' use of the color orange,
I do approve of the black & orange goalie gear that Ilya Bryzgalov is wearing...

Mostly because the pads look freakin' cool.
