Shadow Games...

Groundhog Day

Mark Messier
2002-03 Pacific #256
Feelin' a bit like Bill Murray with a serious case of Deja-Vu.

Shane Corson is an excellent shadow-man, and he makes a cameo appearance on several players' cards within 2002-03 Pacific...

To find the same player harassing FOUR star players within a 410 card set, it's actually rather impressive. A very neat occurrence.

(Having nearly collected 75% of the set, would be amused to find Corson on other cards)

Here's Shane Corson making sure his Mark doesn't make a Mess of the scoresheet...

Vincent Damphousse
2002-03 Pacific #332
I used to get Shayne Corson and Vincent Damphousse mixed up.

They were born in 1966 and 1967 respectively...
Both of them are former first round picks (8th and 6th).

But I believe the confusion arose by the fact that each played for Toronto, Edmonton and Montreal - And BOTH of them wore 21 for Edmonton at some point...

They were also traded for one another during the 1992 offseason.

Shayne Corson
(with Jeremy Roenick cameo)
2002-03 Pacific #358
On Shayne Corson's actual card within this 2002-03 Pacific set, he's checking Jeremy Roenick.

Jaromir Jagr
2002-03 Pacific #392
Coach: "I want you all over that guy like cheese on a pizza."

Certainly not the first card I've seen of Jaromir Jagr being "Czeched" by one of the other team's best defensive players...

The card earns a bonus point for pizza ad on the boards.

Also noticing that many stripes adorn the socks of Toronto's turn of the Century uniforms.

Ice & Juice...

Jussi Markkanen
2002-03 Pacific #146
A huge wave of snow spray & ice chips.
Goalie even has to close his eyes to avoid being blinded.

The alternate Edmonton Oilers uniform is different, to say the least.

Devil May Care...

John Vanbiesbrouck
2002-03 Pacific #231

Another favorite card from 2002-03 Pacific.

Snow spray, bodies flying, and a great view of the goaltender...

Had no idea that John Vanbiesbrouck had played for the New Jersey Devils.

Seems he finished his career in Jersey, playing 9 games (and a relatively impressive 6-3-0 record).

This is from the 2002-03 Pacific set - Beezer's final season was the previous year (2001-02). Seems that they anticipated the goaltender would return. Either way, glad to have this card in my collection.

John Vanbiesbrouk played for the Rangers, Panthers, Flyers, Islanders and Devils. Also managed to keep his number 34 the whole time.

Finished his NHL career with 374 Wins, 346 Losses, 119 Ties/OT losses and 40 shutouts.

Colorado VS St Louis

Milan Hejduk
2002-03 Pacific #91
The Colorado Avalanche and the St Louis Blues 2021 Playoff series is just the second time that these teams have encountered each other in the Playoffs.

The last meeting was during the 2001 Western Conference Final. Colorado won the series in 5 games, but it was still entertaining to watch.

The Avs would of course go on to win the Stanley Cup. Milan Hedjuk had a league-leading 16 assists during the 2001 Playoffs.

Chris Pronger
2000-01 O-Pee-Chee #9

Chris Pronger of the St Louis Blues would come close to winning a Stanley Cup a few times before finally hoisting the prized trophy as a member of the Anaheim Ducks.

Whale Soup for the Hartford Soul...

Mike Liut
1988-89 O-Pee-Chee #127

Digging through my old Hartford Whalers cards... Surprised that I have about 10% of the nearly 5000 or so cards according to TCDB. Of course that list counts everything beyond standard trading cards (including food issues, trading card games, playing cards, etc.)

Following their days in the WHA, the Hartford Whalers were in the NHL from 1979-1996 (17 years). What a difference a couple decades can make, especially with dozens of hockey card brands and seemingly infinite parallels.

To put it in perspective, the Atlanta Thrashers have over 15,000 cards in the database. They existed from 1999 to 2011 (12 years).

Could even be a rather affordable collecting project to try and acquire as many Whalers cards as possible...

Doug Sulliman
1983-84 O-Pee Chee #148
Anytime the dreadful "Cooperalls" are mentioned, most people think of the Philadelphia Flyers. The Hartford Whalers also experimented with this "girdle and shell lower body equipment system".

Fun fact: Contrary to popular belief, the pants worn by NHL players were actually manufactured by CCM, and not Cooper.
The "CCM" logo can be seen at the top and bottom of the pant, incorporated into the vertical stripes.

Hartford Whalers
1989-90 O-Pee-Chee #304
Great snapshot of a faceoff...This angle could definitely become stale if overused, but I can't actually think of many cards like this one.

While not normally a fan of "Team Cards", I do enjoy some of these wide-angle snapshots featured in Topps/OPC cards of this era.

Watching some good old fashioned hockey on YouTube, noticed the centreman would often stand sideways to take a faceoff, and swiping at the puck that way...

Playing youth hockey, I always remember being yelled at by the referee to "square up", before being tossed from the faceoff circle.

Ron Francis
1990-91 O-Pee-Chee Premier #32
After spending nearly the first decade of his career in Hartford, Ron Francis was traded to the Penguins in 1991.

He would re-join the franchise in Carolina (1998 thru 2004) and see his number 10 officially retired by the Hurricanes.

Kevin Dineen
1990-91 Upper Deck #266
(card back)

The "whale hunt" led me to appreciate this snapshot on the back of the card that I had never really noticed before...

Looks as if Kevin Dineen has pushed the puck past goaltender Kelly Hrudey, hoping it has enough steam to cross the goal line.

Peter Sidorkiewicz was Hartford's main netminder for three seasons, after Mike Liut was traded to the Capitals (in exchange for Yvon Corriveau).

The Whalers lost Sidorkiewicz to the 1992 expansion draft.

Zarley Zalapski
1992-93 Upper Deck #316

Action in front of the Whalers' net, with newly acquired netminder Frank Pietrangelo.

This is presumably during the very last Hartford Whalers playoff appearance - A seven game thriller series against Montreal.

Pat Verbeek
1993-94 Upper Deck #331

One of the best-known Whalers, Pat Verbeek was traded to the Rangers in 1995 for a couple players and draft picks.

The Whalers would use a first round pick to select goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere (1st round, 13th overall).

Glen Wesley
1995-96 Collector's Choice #315
(card back)

Formerly of the Bruins,  long time Whalers/Hurricanes defenceman Glen Wesley shown here wearing number 20 with the Whalers.

He switched to number 2 in Carolina, which is now retired by the Hurricanes organization.

From Wikipedia:

"When the Whalers moved to North Carolina to begin the 1997–98 NHL season, they returned the previously retired #2 for Rick Ley (D, 1972–1981) and #19 for John McKenzie (RW, 1977–1979) to circulation, while retaining Howe's #9 without public display. Wesley (who wore No. 20 in Hartford) was the only Hurricane to wear #2 prior to its re-retirement; #19 has been issued to several players since the move"

Kevin Haller
1997-98 Pacific Invincible
NHL Regime #36

The last sightings of The Whale...

Moving forth with the 1997-98 season and the move to Carolina, the "Hurricanes" players are still depicted in their
Whalers uniforms.

Interestingly enough, the "Pacific Invincible" brand was only released in 1997-98 and 2003-04.

Sean Burke
1997-98 Pinnacle Inside #30
Sean Burke was originally acquired by Hartford in 1992 (along with Eric Weinrich) in a trade that sent Bobby Holik to New Jersey.

Burke would be with the organization until shortly after the relocation to Carolina, and was dealt to Vancouver in January of 1998 (and subsequently traded to Philadelphia 2 months later).

Serially Challenged...

2002-03 Pacific Complete
Total Cards: 600

Going through my "cards that I only have one-of" pile to find a home for this card (which happens to have a Jeremy Roenick cameo).

Mikael Samuelsson
2002-03 Pacific Complete #377
Red Variation)
(card back)
Figured it was simply a red variation, didn't realize it was also serial numbered. (In the regular 2002-03 Pacific set, it's the blue version that's serial numbered)

And this is from a time before insert sets got out of hand...

Colorado vs St Louis (2001 Third Round)

(aka Ray Bourque's Stanley Cup run)

Scott Young
2002-03 Pacific #331
At the time of this classic 2001 Western Conference Final series between the Colorado Avalance and the St Louis Blues, the Blues were enjoying one of the longest active playoff streaks in the NHL (eventually reaching 25 years, until they missed the playoffs in 2005 following lockout year).

In game number 3, It was actually Scott Young (a former member of the Avalanche) that scored the game winning goal in double overtime, blasting the puck past Patrick Roy.

Brent Johnson
2003-04 Upper Deck #415
The highlight of goaltender Brent Johnson's career is undoubtedly punching out fellow goaltender Rick DiPietro... Before that incident, I had actually never even heard of Brent Johnson.

Originally drafted by the Colorado Avalanche, rookie Brent Johnson would get the start for game number 5, facing elimination against the Avs, the team that originally drafted him.

Johnson came up with some big saves and caught some lucky bounces, but the Blues ultimately lost in overtime. Even though the series was over in 5 games, the last 3 games were decided in OT.

Brent Johnson actually has a winning NHL career record (140 wins, 112 losses, 31 ties), a .904 save percentage and GAA of 2.63.

Case of Mistaken Identity (Jan & Jiri Hrdina)

Never actually realized that Jan Hrdina and Jiri Hrdina were in fact two separate players... The confusion stems from them both wearing number 38 for the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Jiri Hrdina
1991-92 O-Pee-Chee #213
Jiri Hrdina (Center)
Born: 1958
Drafted: 8th round 1984 (159th overall)
Playing Career: 1987-1992
Teams: Calgary, Pittsburgh

Scored 130 points in 250 career games. Won a Stanley Cup as a member of the Calgary Flames in 1989, and with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1991 & 1992.

Jan Hrdina
2002-03 Pacific #308
Jan Hrdina (Left Wing)
Born: 1976
Drafted: 5th round 1995 (128th overall)
Playing Career: 1999-2006
Teams: Pittsburgh, Phoenix, New Jersey, Columbus

Scored 297 points in 513 career games.

Jan Hrdina
2003-04 Upper Deck #147
One of my common duplicates from 2003-04 Upper Deck was Jan Hrdina... And since there's barely any action, it's among my least favorite cards.

Just noticed that part of my dislike for this card might be due to the green coloring that Upper Deck used for the Phoenix Coyotes in Series I, after the Coyotes had changed their uniform colors and logo to maroon and white.

The card back also has the original Coyotes logo. The design used for Series II features the updated Coyotes' logo and colors.

Another Crown...

Jeff O'Neill
2001-02 Pacific Crown Royale #28
2001-02 Pacific Crown Royale
Total Cards: 180

Surprised to find one of these within a random bulk acquisition.

I keep all my Crowns in plastic toploaders to protect the edges, and this one's no exception... (Even though the front photo seems washed out, over an extremely dark background)

Another vertical card, which I actually prefer.

Jeff O'Neill
2001-02 Pacific Crown Royale #28
(card back)
Back of the card is fine, although I'm not a fan of the player & team name on a wavy flag banner. Not looking to acquire any more from this set.

Jeff O'Neill was one of the original Hartford Whalers, before the team moved to Carolina.

Scored 237 goals and 259 assists for 496 points in 821 career games.

A Few Card Cameos...

Phillipe Bozon
1993-94 Upper Deck #113
Noticed while looking through 1993-94 Upper Deck, Shayne Corson makes a cameo appearance on Phillipe Bozon's card...

Shayne Corson
1993-94 Upper Deck #132
It's funny how the previous image is more flattering than the photograph used on Corson's actual card from the same set...

Scott Walker
2002-03 Pacific #216
The goaltender in the above snapshot is Ron Tugnutt...

Which actually made me think of another great cameo... Ron Tugnutt appears to be making a nice save on Scott Walker's card in 2002-03 Pacific.

WTF Hockey Card: Markus Naslund (2002-03 Upper Pacific #281)

Markus Naslund
2002-03 Upper Pacific #281
Markus Naslund collides with a member of the Calgary Flames...

But look even closer... There's definitely another helmet visible bottom right, meaning another member of the Flames is at the bottom of the pile.

WTF Hockey Card: Petri Skriko (1991-92 Pro Set #517)

Petri Skriko
1991-92 Pro Set #517
Another Pro Set card "highlight" involving obscure player Petri Skriko... (the other simply being a poorly aligned card within my collection)

On this card, one spectator in the front row appears to be having a great time... While the woman diagonally behind him is clearly reading a book while the game is in progress.

Looks like a freakin' novel. It's definitely not a game program or the back of a ticket stub that's she's reading...

Claude Lemieux
2002-03 Pacific #299
Kinda reminds me of this card... Which has become another one of my favorites... Couldn't care less for Claude Lemieux, but it's the fans in the background that make this an entertaining card to look at.

Most of them seem totally thrilled to be at an NHL game, and enjoy the battle taking place in front of them...

Except for the cold, disinterested blonde who's gazing off into the distance. I bet she's no fun at all. Kinda reminds me of that bitch Ceilia Hodes from the TV series Weeds.

Cool Card: Oleg Tverdovsky (2002-03 Pacific #10)

Oleg Tverdovsky
(2002-03 Pacific #10)
It's kinda neat when the card number is the same as the player's jersey...

Oleg Tverdovsky's number 10 is even displayed in this overhead shot. A simple image, full of graceful balance and motion.

The shadow of the puck is visible, so it's still airborne and live. I'd be curious to know if he's about to tip a rebound into the opposing team's goal, or preparing to steer the puck clear of his own net....

The back of the card mentions being a scoring leader among defencemen, so either is possible.

WTF Hockey Card: Mike Leclerc (2002-03 Pacific #5)

Mike Leclerc
(2002-03 Pacific #5)
On your ass, and surrounded by the enemy...
That's exactly how I'd like to be photographed on a hockey card.

It's amazing how many of the Dallas Stars they managed to fit into this shot.

Chris Drury
(2002-03 Pacific #88)
Now THIS is how to take a photo of someone surrounded by oppposing players...

Chris Drury is still on his feet, in the middle of the absolute carnage occuring in front of the Blues net.

Alexander Mogilny
(1992-93 Upper Deck #167)
Also brings to mind this card from a decade earlier...

One of the very first gems I ever pulled from a pack of Upper Deck was this beauty of a card featuring Alexander Mogilny.

Coincidentally, all three cards feature an instance of a player with three opposing players and goaltender.

Cool Card: Neil Little (2002-03 Pacific #283)

Neil Little
(2002-03 Pacific #283)
Every set of hockey cards needs a good portrait or profile...
This closeup of rarely seen Flyers goaltender Neil Little is the only card like it in the set.

Spending most of his career in the AHL, Neil Little only played 2 games for the Flyers, but still ends up with a great looking card.

Cool Card: Damian Rhodes (2002-03 Pacific #20)

Damian Rhodes
(2002-03 Pacific #20)
I love this overhead shot of the Atlanta Thrashers' goal crease with both defencemen in the frame.

Rhodes has either just made a save, or is positioning himself to ensure the puck stays safely out of his net.

It also reminded me of a trivia question from the NHL Hitz 2002 video game...
Screenshot from NHL Hitz 2002

Get it right, and you're rewarded with points to improve your team.
Finally! A chance to exploit all the useless hockey trivia I've accumulated over the years...
