The default goaltender is the standard... When it's someone I don't recognize, I'm curious who it is - Especially if I watched a lot of hockey during that era.
Had often heard that Patrick Roy had popularized the number 33 for goaltenders...
During the 1989-90 season, Mario Gosselin of the Quebec Nordiques was one of six goalies wearing jersey 33.

He also happens to have the most amazing card in the entire 1990-91 Upper Deck set.
Couldn't believe that I hadn't already scanned this card...
This snapshot is particularly remarkable, as Gosselin played just 26 games for the Kings.
Mario Gosselin was one of four Kings' goaltenders to see action in 1989-90.

Just noticed the artwork on the top of his helmet... Is that an old-time goalie mask as part of the design?
During 1990-91, the Kings' only goalies were and Berthiaume and Hrudey - With backup goaltender Daniel Berthiaume playing almost as many games as starter Kelly Hrudey.

Just happened to acquire this card of another goaltender with the Cataractes.
From Wikipedia:
"Cataractes" is the plural form of 'cataracte', which means in English 'cataract' in the sense of a powerful waterfall, derived from the Latin word 'cataracta' meaning 'waterfall' or 'portcullis'.
The team is named after the Shawinigan Falls, a prominent waterfall in the city of Shawinigan.
I love it when a post manages to go full circle.
